It is one of the few structures in Queensland that was constructed by convict labor and is set in a peaceful park setting. This tower mill was built in the 1820s and is a perfect example of convict architecture. It is well worth a visit and will surely leave you speechless.
This historic site has undergone two major initiatives for restoration. The first attempt was in the late 1970s and involved the restoration of the original mill, the sails, the gallery and the internal working mechanisms. The restoration effort was led by Janet Hogan and the Queensland National Trust. However, these efforts failed because engineering reports advised against exposing the delicate facade and because no original plans could be found. To rectify the situation, Janet Hogan commissioned a research report that included the analysis of the sandstone and brick fabric.
The Tower Mill is Brisbane’s oldest convict-built structure. It was built in 1828 and used for corn and wheat processing, and also as a signal station between the CBD and Brisbane River. In the early twentieth century, it was used for the research of early radio, telephony, and television. In 1992, it was heritage listed and is now a beautiful centrepiece of Observatory Park.
The Tower Mill is also known as the Old Windmill Observatory. Originally a signal station, it was used to relay news of shipping in the bay. Later, it was converted into a public observatory. In 1862, a prominent contractor and mayor of Brisbane, John Petrie removed the rotating caps and replaced them with a time ball. A panorama of the tower was captured by an unknown photographer.
The tower is also home to a small museum dedicated to convict history. Convict history is richly documented in the tower’s history. In 1828, a convict prison was located here. Convicts were forced to work in this penal settlement. In addition to grinding grain, convicts were also subjected to a variety of punishments.
