McDowall Queensland is a small residential suburb located in the north of the city of Brisbane. The suburb has a population of approximately 6,800 residents. It is within the Australian Eastern Standard Time zone, which is four hours ahead of London. In terms of size, the suburb covers 4.293 square kilometres.

There is also a McDowall State School, located in the northern suburbs of the city. The school is named after Colonel John McDowall, a notable early settler of the area. McDowall was the first Australian surveyor to use a theodolite, a compass based on a magnetic needle, as opposed to a chain. He was also the first to recommend the use of a standard steel tape for ground measurement in Queensland.
McDowall has two community based shopping centres, the McDowall Village and the North-West Plaza. These are anchored by IGA supermarket and Woolworths respectively. Other retail establishments include a drive-in shopping centre and a variety of specialty stores.
While not a major urban center, McDowall is a well-respected place. Many visitors to the region come from close by and further afield. The suburb has a median age of 38, compared to the national average of 36.
The city of Brisbane is not too far away. For the more intrepid, the closest airports are Gold Coast Airport and Newcastle Airport. Although a little farther away, the town of Mcdowall is within 10 km of the Brisbane CBD.
McDowall’s population has grown from about 2500 in 1980 to about 6500 in 2001. Most of the new residents are young couples with children. Some of the older inhabitants are retirees. In the 2011 census, the median age of the population was 38 years. A large proportion of the residents were born in Australia, with the next most common countries of birth being England and Italy.
There are many places to see in and around McDowall, including the Raven Street Reserve, which boasts a 24 hectare bushland area. Valentine McDowall Park is a greenbelt that was protected in the 1950s when the area was subdivided. During the same period, the nearby Northside Christian College opened.
McDowall is a beautiful and tranquil suburb, with many tree-lined streets and patches of vegetation throughout the area. However, it is important to note that the suburb requires a professional tree management service.

One of the more unusual things about McDowall is its name. The name comes from a former farmer, Colonel John McDowall. His son Archibald was the first to move to Queensland in 1861 and a year later became the first Surveyor-General of Queensland. As such, he advocated the importance of a survey before selecting land. Moreover, he was one of the key figures in the establishment of a time-standard system for a more rationalised parish boundaries in Queensland.
