McDowall
McDowall is an outer northern suburb of Brisbane, Australia. The suburb is located approximately 9 kilometres northwest of the Brisbane Central Business District. It is a residential community with a population of 7,237. Most residents are native Australians, though the suburb also has some foreign-born residents.
The suburb is situated east of Bunyaville State Forest Park. Cabbage Tree Creek flows through the area. Valentine McDowall Park was designated as a greenbelt in the 1950s. In 1972, it was managed by the council. This park honors Dr. Valentine McDowall, who pioneered work in the field of radio and television broadcasting in Queensland.
There are two community-based shopping centres in McDowall. The North-West Plaza is anchored by Woolworths and the McDowall Village shopping centre is anchored by IGA. Many of the streets in the suburb are themed to commemorate famous movie stars.
Some of the main attractions in McDowall include the Raven Street Reserve, which is a 24 hectare bushland reserve. The reserve has been managed by the Brisbane City Council since 1972. Discover more about McDowall here.
The suburb also has two schools. The McDowall State School is located in the McDowall State School precinct. One school was named in honour of Colonel John McDowall, while the other was named in honour of Colonel Frederick Annand.
In addition, there are several shopping centres in the area. A drive-in shopping center was opened in the southern border of the suburb, and there are two shopping centres within the suburb. Other shopping options are available in Stafford Heights, Everton Park, and Chermside West.
Located in the northern suburbs, the suburb is home to the McDowall State School. In 1975, the school was accepted by the Place Names Board of Queensland. Currently, the school has a student body of 650. This school is part of the Northside Christian Catchment Area.
The suburb is located in the Eastern Standard Time zone. As of the 2011 census, the population was 6,818. This number is slightly above the Australian median. The suburb has a total of 7 estates.
