Brisbane
Brisbane is Australia’s third-largest city. It is a dynamic and exciting city that has a vibrant art and culture scene, outdoor adventures and a laid-back lifestyle. It is also one of the most affordable cities in the country, with a large and growing job market.
Brisbane’s climate is warm and sunny year-round. However, summers can be long and hot with average temperatures of around 27 deg C or more. Temperatures rarely drop below 20 deg C in winter.
The Brisbane River flows through the city centre and is a major feature of the landscape. The 5.3-kilometre-long Riverwalk parallels the river, offering plenty of places to relax and take in the views.
You can cycle along the Riverwalk or stroll it on foot, making it a great way to see the city and soak up its atmosphere. The twilight bike tours run by Brisbane by Bicycle are particularly picturesque and provide a different perspective on the city.
A range of festivals and events are held in the city throughout the year. The annual Brisbane International Film Festival attracts over 200,000 visitors. Other notable events include the Buddha Birth Day festival at South Bank parklands, the Paniyiri Festival and the Bridge to Brisbane charity fun run.
Several world-class sports stadiums are located within the city. Suncorp Stadium is home to the A-League and National Rugby teams, as well as Australian cricket. Other sports venues include the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, and the Brisbane Entertainment Centre at Boondall and Lang Park.
Soccer is the sport of choice for many in Brisbane, with a number of clubs playing in the domestic and international leagues. The Brisbane Lions and Brisbane Broncos play in the A-League while the Queensland Warriors and Gold Coast United compete in the WNBL.
It is also the venue for numerous music concerts, theatre and dance performances. The city has a rich cultural history, and a number of museums and heritage buildings are open to the public.
Shopping in the city centre is a popular pastime, with a vibrant and eclectic mix of local and international brands. The city’s main retail centres include the Queen Street Mall and the historic Brisbane Arcade. Other popular areas for shopping are Fortitude Valley and West End.
For a more specialized shopping experience, there are some great outlet centres in the suburbs of Chermside, Indooroopilly, Carindale and North Lakes. These malls are great places to find discount goods and fashion accessories.
